According to the American Heritage Dictionary (Houghton Mifflin Company, 2009), the first definition of the word inspiration is the “stimulation of the mind or emotions to a high level of feeling or activity”. Inspiration produces activity that was, without it, unlikely to occur. To achieve a high-level of career success and fulfillment, we can all benefit from frequent shots of inspiration, stirring our desire to do ever-greater things with our careers and our lives.
The challenge is identifying your own sources of inspiration, realizing that these are different for everyone. Do you know what inspires you? Below is list of five common sources of inspiration:
- Having a Vision of Success - Some of us are inspired by visualizing success. This source of self-inspiration is part visualization and part ambition, usually present among those who have a high energy-level and are willing to continually try new things and grow their careers. The inspiration is the visualization, which propels one to do more. Books like “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne are based on this source of inspiration.
- Observing the Achievement of Others – Some of us are inspired when we see others, comparably placed in life, succeed. This source of inspiration may come from watching a friend or colleague move ahead (remember that inspiration is different from jealousy) – or watching someone achieve something as a result of hard work. Honestly, I love underdog stories. Not the sappy and contrived Hollywood stories -- but the real rags-to-riches make-it-happen stories. They renew my energy to do more with my own career. Over the past few months I’ve been watching Susan Boyle’s video whenever I need a dose of inspiration.
- Having Faith – You may enjoy inspiration through your faith. You respond with greater activity because you have a higher calling to act or are propelled in a way that is consistent with the teaching of your faith. If you have a strong faith, you may see God working through others and allow your own actions to be propelled through this desire to do the work for a greater good.
- Having a Desire to Give - You may be inspired to achieve in your career because you have a strong desire to give those you love more in their lives. You are inspired by the happiness you can bring others, you do not want to fail, or disappoint those you love. Newlyweds and new parents often enjoy this sense of inspiration.
- Transferring Emotional Stimulation – Have you ever been inspired to do more from taking in natural beauty, art, poetry, or music. The feelings produced help you transcend your current state and transfer positive emotions which, in turn, energize your activities. Music does it for me. While I love and appreciate art, I have not yet been brought to a higher state myself as a result of it. I know so many people who take hiking trips and return with a renewed sense of purpose. (They almost make me want to take up hiking.) Again, inspiration is personal.
We are all different with respect to our sources of inspiration. What inspires you? What makes stimulates you to a high level of activity?
Please share them. I'd love to know.

What inspires me today is children. Seeing a new mom with a child or seeing a bond being formed is amazing. My inspiration is working with mothers who are in recovery from drugs and alcohol. Once off the substances, these mothers begin a new journey that is absolutely gratifying to watch. I am able to offer them hope with being there once myself. I love being able to encourage them in attaching with their little ones and seeing the joy the children have in having their mom back. Many of these children have been taking by Child Protective Services and have attachment issues. The greatest gift for me is giving back to these women. I would do it free of charge but through faith I have been able to slowly begin a career in helping others with addictions. I believe you were right Paula when you stated "If you have a strong faith, you may see God working through others and allow your own actions to be propelled through this desire to do the work for a greater good". Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to voice my views! Tisha
Hi Paula, like your blog and site! Incorporating SuBo and Career inspiration is a stroke of genius. Saw an interview with her where she said her mother died when she was 52 and that triggered her to do "something with her life" as her mother wanted her to. She went to the Glasgow audition for the X-Factor and the rest is history... Keep up the good work! Cheers, Jorgen
I am a small business owner and I find inspiration each and every single day by the education, support, constructive criticism, motivation and stability (jut to name a few) I am able to give to my employees. The emotional stimulation is energizing and it is what gets me up and out bed everyday with pure excitement for the day to come. I am constantly looking for new business ideas and fine tuning current models to grow the business. I don’t do it just for myself, I do it for the individuals that work for me and put their trust in me to provide a job and a paycheck so they can feed their families. This is my inspiration and it gives me the motivation I need to keep going!
I'm stimulated to a high level of activity in my work through the rewards to be had. For instance, recognition through words of praise and/or financial reward; pleasing others is rewarding to me; pleasing my superiors, coworkers, clients. I'm inspired by the desire to give; give to my family, give to my company, give to the community. Life seems idle to me if I'm not contributing to family, work, and community. It's uninspiring and nonmotivating to me, to be in a position of low visibility and low recognition, therefore, I find that the best way to be recognized is to produce good work and make a name for myself within the organization; building and maintaining a good reputation as a valuable part of the organization. It feels quite unrewarding and uninspiring to just report to a job where hardly anyone knows yor name and there is no opportunity for growth, both financially and with opportunity for career advancement.
Ahhhhh! Inspiration. It is like a breath of mountain air. Inspiration hits me frequently throughout the day. It comes from nowhere many times and something I have to go looking for it. When I am feeling particularly uninspired, I go on what the author Julia Cameron call “the artists date”. I take myself out for a morning coffee and sit and enjoy a brew as I write in my journal, (journal writing in itself inspires me). Then I go to some obscure gallery, garden or natural place and I walk around and just take in beauty. I get creative stimulation by just observing the big picture perspective and the tiny details of places and things.
What inspires me is arriving at a stage in life where I can share my own personal experiences with younger generations, then watch them learn and grow as they encounter their own "ah-ha" moments. I believe one of the greatest contributions we can make in business is mentoring and developing the next generation of leaders in the workplace. They are our future!
In order to feel stimuled to a high level of feeling or activity, you need to feel more energised than your normal self. Daily exercise provides this kind of energy. Meditation calms the mind to help you with streamlined thinking. Quiet moments in meditation give a stimulus to newer and creative thoughts. Keeping yourself up-to-date with your profession helps expand your knowledge and gives you newer ideas. All three together give a lot of inspiration to acheive your goals.
Thanks! These are all wonderful pieces of advice to build energy.
